TO ALL JHA MEMBERS,
RECENTLY OUR MEMBERS HAVE BEEN GETTING EITHER SPAM, PHISHING ATTEMPTS
OR E-MAIL HI-JACKING.
HERE IS A DEFINITION OF EACH AND HOW YOU CAN PROTECT YOURSELF
FROM THEM.
SPAM- Spam is unwanted or unrequested e-mail and can consist of advertising,
web links, and request for assistance from a source either familiar or not. Believe
me when I say that those rich dead relatives or unknowns that left a lot of money
for you are attempts at gaining personal information from you that will not be used
for anything good for you. If they contain a weblink don't follow it.
It usually goes to a malicious web site and you will get yourself a least some
malware and at worst a worm or virus.
Or maybe it leads to some sexual aids, or other advertising. Be very careful if the weblink has a .ru in it. That is Russia and the worst sites are there.
What can you do about Spam? There are a couple of things that you can do to try
to stop the flow from a particular source.
If you use a e-mail program like Outlook Express you highlight the message in the upper pane by clicking on it, then go to Message
on the menu bar and the resulting drop down menu will have a Block Sender option.
Click on that and it will block all messages from that sender.
This works well to block a particular sender but some spammers use mulitple sender names and you will have
to block them all as you get them.
You can also notify the senders ISP by following the steps below:
1. I AM ASSUMING THAT YOU ARE USING OUTLOOK EXPRESS OR A MAIL CLIENT THAT
IS SIMILAR.
2. WITH THE MESSAGE LINE HIGHLIGHTED, RIGHT CLICK TO GET A MENU, FROM THE
MENU CHOOSE PROPERTIES, ANOTHER SMALL WINDOW WILL OPEN UP, IT WILL HAVE
TWO TABS; (GENERAL) AND (DETAILS).
Click on the details tab, and scroll down until you see the information similar
to what is shown below.

example. In this case we want to send this message and the message source to
3. WHILE ON THE DETAILS WINDOW AN OPTION ON THE LOWER RIGHT THAT SAYS "MESSAGE SOURCE" , CLICK ON THAT AND HIGHLITE AND COPY ALL OF IT. (START IN UPPER LEFT HAND CORNER AND HOLD DOWN LEFT MOUSE BUTTON) AND DRAG ALL THE WAY DOWN, (THE SCREEN WILL SCROLL IN THE SMALL BOX), CONTINUE UNTIL YOU REACH THE END, (IE NO MORE TEXT UNHIGHLITED).
4. RIGHT CLICK THE MOUSE BUTTON AND CHOOSE COPY FROM THE MENU.
5. NOW GO BACK TO THE ORIGINAL E-MAIL, CLICK FORWARD TO
FORWARD THE MESSAGE, IN THE TO LINE, SEND IT TO THE ISP IN THE FROM
LINE. (IN THIS EXAMPLE abuse@gmail.com).
6. iN THE MESSAGE LINE PLACE THE WORDS "SPAM ---MESSAGE SOURCE INCLUDED"
7. IN THE BODY OF THE MESSAGE DO NOT ERASE ANYTHING BUT PLACE YOUR CURSOR
ON THE UPPER LEFT OF THE MESSAGE AND CLICK ONCE YOU SHOULD HAVE A
BLINKING CURSOR AT THE ENTRY POINT. TYPE "--------MESSAGE SOURCE --------
AND PRESS ENTER.
8. NOW LEFT CLICK THE MOUSE AND CHOOSE PASTE...THE MESSAGE SOURCE THAT
YOU COPIED SHOULD INSERTED INTO THE E-MAIL AND YOUR CURSOR SHOULD BE
AT THE END OF THE PASTED MESSAGE SOURCE. HIT ENTER TO START A NEW LINE
THEN TYPE SEVERAL "-------------------------". THIS WILL HELP THE ISP IDENTIFY THE
BEGINNING AND END OF THE MESSAGE SOURCE.
9. HIT THE SEND BUTTON. YOU SHOULD RECEIVE AN AUTOMATED MESSAGE RESPONSE
WITHIN 24-48 HOURS.
PHISHING- Phishing is an attempt to get your personal information and passwords
usually to your e-mail account but could also be attempting to get your
bank account number. There is usually an official looking e-mail from your
ISP or other sources that try to get you to enter your name e-mail address,
and password. Don't fall for this. If in doubt call your isp tech support or
customer service and ask them about it.
Here is an Example:
A DGTFX Virus has been detected in your at&t.net folders. Your email account has to be upgraded to our new Secured DGTFX anti-virus 2011 version to prevent damages to our web mail log and your important files. Click your reply tab, Fill the columns below and send back to us or your email account will be terminated to avoid spread of the virus.

Date: Wed, 8 Feb 2012 10:36:34 -0800 (PST) From: AT&T ! Inc <pioneerbud@att.net> Reply-To: AT&T ! Inc <verification_alertservice@live.com> Subject: ..........IMPORTANT NOTICE.......... To: undisclosed recipients: ; IN THIS CASE YOU SHOULD SEND THE MESSAGE AND MESSAGE SOURCE TO
BOTH ISP'S SHOWN (abuse@att.net, and abuse@live.com) BY FOLLOWING STEPS
3 THRU 8.
NOTE: TO ENTER BOTH ADDRESSES ON THE "TO" LINE IN STEP 5,
SEPERATE THEM WITH A SEMICOLON (abuse@att.net;abuse@live.com).
IN THE SPAM EXAMPLE WHEN YOU REPLY THEY WILL ASK FOR MORE INFORMATION
AND PROBABLY EITHER TRY TO GET MONEY FROM YOU OR GET YOUR BANK ACCOUNT
NUMBER SO THAT MONEY CAN BE DEPOSITED TO YOU. EITHER WAY YOU LOOSE.
IN THE PHISHING EXAMPLE IF YOU GIVE THEM WHAT THEY ASK FOR THEY WILL
USE YOUR E-MAIL ACCOUNT TO SEND OUT SPAM. IN OTHER WORDS YOUR E-MAIL
ADDRESS HAS BEEN HI-JACKED. YOU CAN FIX THIS BY CHANGING YOUR E-MAIL
ACCOUNT OR LOGIN PASSWORD.
WORMS- THESE ARE PROGRAMS THAT CAN INFEST A COMPUTER AND WILL USE
YOUR ADDRESS BOOK AND PIECES OF TEXT FROM E-MAILS TO SEND ITSELF
TO EVERYONE ON YOUR ADDRESS LIST.
MALWARE OR SPYBOTS- SMALL PROGRAMS THAT GATHER KEYSTROKE INFORMATION
AND SEND IT BACK TO THEIR CREATOR. THEY CAN CAPTURE
ACCOUNT NUMBERS AND PASSWORDS. SOME OF THESE
TYPES OF PROGRAMS ARE USED BY LEGITIMATE PROGRAMS
FOR OWNER REGISTRATION OF SOFTWARE AND HARDWARE
OVER THE INTERNET.
OTHER TYPES OF SPAM- YOU START RECEIVING INFORMATION FROM A SOURCE THAT
YOU DID NOT GIVE YOUR E-MAIL ADDRESS TO. THIS CAN
HAPPEN WHEN A MEMBERSHIP OR EMPLOYEE LIST IS USED
WITHOUT AUTHORIZATION. TO STOP THIS SEND A E-MAIL BACK
TO THE SOURCE REQUESTING YOUR NAME BE REMOVED
FROM THEIR LIST. IF THAT DESN'T WORK THEN REPORT THEM
TO THEIR ISP AND YOUR ISP AS SPAMMERS, FOLLOWING
THE DIRECTIONS UNDER SPAM ABOVE. YOU CAN ALSO
MARK THEM AS SPAMMERS IN SOME OF THE NEWER E-MAIL
PROGRAMS AND ON THE MAIL SERVER AT YOUR ISP.
YAHOO USA IS THE WORST FOR REPORTING SPAM OR PHISHING BECAUSE THEY
REQUIRE YOU TO GO TO A WEBSITE AND COMPLETE A FORM. ALL OTHERS WILL
ACCEPT E-MAIL FROM YOU IF ADDRESSED TO abuse@ispname . MSN and HOTMail
ARE THE BEST WITH 1ST RESPONSE IN ABOUT AN HOUR AND FURTHER NOTICE
OF DISPOSITION IN ABOUT A DAY.

1/14/10 All members that have either a Hot-Mail or MSN e-mail address will not be getting e-mail from JHA. I sent out two messages last night, this being one of them, and they all rejected on the Hot-Mail and MSN to those members that use the Hot-Mail or MSN addresses. This happened before and we got it resolved but it is going to take those members involved to straighten it out by complaining to their ISP.
Thank you Bob Parkman (JHA E-Mail)
10/07/09 TO ALL JHA MEMBERS, I AM GETTING COMPLAINTS ABOUT SOME PEOPLE NOT GETTING THE JHA E-MAIL. IF YOU ARE ON BELLSOUTH.NET AND HAVEN'T GONE TO THE NEW HOMEPAGE AS
DIRECTED BY AT&T (YOUR NEW ISP), THEN YOU MAY HAVE NOT BEEN NOTIFIED OF A SPAM FILTER CHANGE ON THE MAIL SERVER. ONE OF OUR MEMBERS, FRANCES MULLANE HAS KINDLY SUPPLIED A PROCEDURE TO CHECK TO SEE IF YOUR JHA MAIL HAS BEEN PUT IN THE SPAM FOLDER ON THE SERVER, AND HOW TO GET IT OUT, AND ALSO HOW TO PREVENT THE PROBLEM INTHE FUTURE. BOB PARKMAN (JHA E-MAIL)
Directions:
Close Outlook or whatever you normally use to get your ATT or Bellsouth e-mails.
Open a browser... Microsoft internet explorer or Firefox. Put ATT.net in the address line in the browser. You should get a page that looks a bit like Yahoo. Go to the mail icon; you will be asked to sign in. Do that using your normal ATT or Bellsouth e-mail address. The password is your password for your e-mail using outlook or outlook express.
You should be in a mail page and you will see there is a spam folder. If there is stuff in there... DON'T delete. But open the folder and look at what is in there... If there is a lot you need to go page by page and if you see stuff you want... not spam then check the box. Once you have checked all the boxes on the one page then go to MOVE at the top or bottom and select INBOX. Once you have all the good stuff in your in box you can delete the rest of the spam. I left it there and went back and found a few more. Go above that area and you will see SPAM and edit spam click on that. Now you get a page asking for tons of info but look on the LH column and you will see SPAM. Click on that and you now will see where you can tell it NOT to mess with Spam. The problem is it is putting spam and good stuff in the spam folder and it NEVER shows up in outlook or outlook express.
You can also try and find a page to complain about this.
If you are confused call 1 888 321-2375 and say it is an e-mail problem and make someone walk you through the process of doing what I just laid out. Then ask for the webpage to complain. This approach will cost them more money.
Bellsouth used to have "webmail". It just handled your mail online when needed. No advertizments... not tied to any websites like Yahoo. This whole AT&T Home Page is just an advertizing ploy and if it has screwed up your mail you need to cause them at least some of the inconvenience they caused you. I found 50 legitimate e-mails on there and many from JHA... If they see that it went to multiple receipients then they say it must be spam. AOL tried that years ago and lost a ton of people.
If you resolve it yourself... still call the number and tell them you need help finding the website to complain about the HomePage.
Frances Mullane
We have a real problem developing here. Anything sent with a web link in it is being
rejected by Hotmail.com. I don't have hotmail or MSN which apparently uses Hotmail.
so I don't know how to fix it. The flyer I sent had 2 weblinks on it.
I sent out welcome messages to new members and it of course has the JHA web link in it. It was rejected by Hotmail to all the members that are using Hotmail.com Members using hotmail will have to find a fix for this or will not get e-mail that contains a web-link.
